Richard Binning is the Director of BIM Technology for Wakefield Beasley & Associates. Richard has been interested in Architecture and design since High School and computers since childhood.  Growing up with a mainframe computer in his bedroom, he knew that any career choice would inevitably involve a computer, long before personal computers were common place. Richard’s 25 years of experience in AEC comes from both sides of the construction trade.  While serving his country in the United States Navy Seabees, he earned construction experience performing vertical and horizontal control site surveys, set batter boards for new construction projects, performed material testing on concrete pours, and performed quality control review of construction methods on projects he designed.  As a Seabee Engineering Aid, he completed many designs of small to medium size buildings including performing complete electrical, hvac, and plumbing design in addition to the construction duties listed previously.

Upon transitioning back into the civilian workforce, he focused on opportunities to integrate his experience in design and construction with his early intrigue in computing.  This focus on integration has driven him to combine new technologies to better align the designers workflow within a BIM delivery method.  Utilizing BIM methods since before Jerry Laiserin coined the term; he has trained many hundreds of Architects, Engineers, and designers in more efficient use of the software and tools at their disposal.

Richard is a member of the Autodesk Developer Network, and has volunteered his time to improve the Architecture profession by participating on many industry committees and standards bodies, led User groups at the local, national and international level and has been a guest speaker at industry conferences in the United States, Australia, and Japan.

Richard focuses on best practices, training, integration, and developing customized software solutions to design problems for Wakefield Beasley & Associates, Wakefield Beasley Interiors, and A Classic Studio.  When not solving problems at work, he can be found spending time with his wife, son, and dogs, coaching and refereeing local academy and select soccer teams for United Futbol Academy, volunteering at a local Boy Scout Troop and the local high school band program, delivering Food for the Hungry with the MSGFoundation, cooking, and working in the Garden or around the house.  He has maintained a technical blog called “Beside the Cursor” since 2004, and writes technical articles for industry magazines and our own WBA blog. He is a supporter of the Atlanta Silverbacks and also enjoys creating Halloween costumes.
